Vancouver AI January 2025

Another Excellent Meetup! 🎉

Vancouver AI Community Meetup #VAI13: A Night of Human-Machine Collaboration

The Vancouver AI Community hosted their 13th meetup on January 29, 2025 at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, bringing together researchers, artists, entrepreneurs, and AI enthusiasts for an evening of exploration at the intersection of technology and humanity.

Event Vision

This wasn’t your typical tech meetup. Positioned as “a gathering of the tribes,” the event asked fundamental questions about what it means to be human in an age of artificial minds. The focus was on actively shaping the narrative of human-machine collaboration rather than simply discussing AI developments.

Lionel Ringenbach - Experimental Software Artist
Showcased a real-time iteration of Compovision, an interactive installation exploring visual prompting—the ability to generate artistic ideas without words by placing objects in front of cameras.

Nicole A. Donnelly - AI Adoption Specialist
Shared expertise on effectively adopting AI tools while making complex technologies approachable and transforming routine tasks into creative opportunities.

Additional Notable Speakers:

  • Marina Tsougrianis (Holy Mother of the Void)
  • Gabriel George Sr. (Tsleil-Waututh Nation)
  • Mirjana Prpa (Professor, Northeastern University) - HCI research in AI, ML, and VR/AR
  • Brittney Smaila (Human Storyteller) - Spoken word exploring AI and human connection
  • Ed Kennedy (Latent Space Navigator)
  • Kris KrĂĽg (Host, Vancouver AI & CBC Sandboxing AI)

What to Expect

The meetup delivered raw insights from the bleeding edge of AI development, philosophical discussions about consciousness and creativity, hands-on tool exploration, and honest conversations about both the promises and perils of AI advancement.

Community Engagement

The event welcomed everyone from skeptics to dreamers, emphasizing technology as a means to amplify human potential rather than an end in itself. Attendees engaged with ethical frameworks for AI use while contributing to conversations that shape the future.

Venue & Accessibility

Location: H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, 1100 Chestnut St, Vancouver
The venue is fully accessible with parking and public transit options available.

Looking Ahead

This meetup kicks off Vancouver AI’s 2025 schedule, with monthly gatherings planned through December, positioning Vancouver as a key player in the global AI conversation.

The Vancouver AI Community continues to foster a space where technology meets humanity, encouraging participants to write themselves into the future rather than being written by it.
